This document tries to answer, in one way or another, some of the frequently asked questions that appear in the Usenet newsgroup (ng) sci.geo.geology (s.g.g). It is strongly based upon the original FAQ, but has been somewhat refurbished. Phil Ingram's "Using the Web for Earth Sciences" is no longer contained in this FAQ, but a lot of links have been added to the FAQ itself. Please give due credit to the original "FAQ-man" [rsr(at)amthyst.dweomer.org (R. Spencer Ramshaw)] for all the work done in the past, and to all others who have contributed. Any comments, questions or queries (defunct links, suggestions, etc.) should be directed to:
"The science dealing with the structure of the earth's crust and formation and development of its various layers: it includes the study of individual rock types and early forms of life found as fossils in rocks."
Webster's
Possible subjects for discussion would include all aspects of solid earth geology and geophysics (including, but NOT limited to: plate tectonics, tectonophysics, petrology, mineralogy, volcanology, structural geology, paleontology, sedimentary processes, basin analysis, seismic exploration, seismic stratigraphy, petroleum geology, seismology, geochemistry, glaciation, groundwater hydrology, hydrogeology, geochronology, paleomagnetism, paleoclimatology). This notwithstanding, there are, in some cases, ng's better "equipped" to deal with some questions, such as mineralogy questions (sci.geo.mineralogy) or questions to do with earthquakes (sci.geo.earthquakes). There are also ng's dealing with hydrology, rivers + lakes, fluids, etc. If you have no luck in this ng you should try another, possibly more appropriate, forum. It can help us keep each other informed on upcoming events of interest to earth science researchers and workers, and computing in the earth sciences. It can be used to answer queries from laymen, geologists and geoscientists, and students of all disciplines. This explicitly implies that it can be used for the passing on of knowledge to aspiring geoscientists, in such a manner as to assist them in their studies and keep/build up their interest in geology. Nevertheless, it should be said (especially to students of the geosciences) that, although the group endeavours to be helpful, the FAQ is here to be used. After checking the FAQ and the links it contains, please feel free to post your question to the group. Very simple questions will normally be scorned upon.
Purpose and basics:
The newsgroup "sci.geo.geology" is intended primarily for discussions at a level which would be relevant and informative to active researchers and workers in earth sciences (i.e. earth scientists and students), but is open for general discussions as well. It hosts discussions, debates, and comments that are less formal and more timely than is possible in juried, peer reviewed scientific journals. It is a clearinghouse for exchange of information, ideas, programs, images, data, and citations. If you would like to make images, programs or large amounts of data available to the group you should put them on a web site and POST A LINK to the ng with your invitation. DO NOT post images or other binary files, or masses of data to the ng! It is also advisable for those interested in downloading such information to have a good anti-virus program installed. Also belonging to basics is rudimentary netiquette: It is NOT good netiquette to post in HTML, you can be severely annoying, and cost others money, by doing so. Nor is it good netiqutte to reply to posts with private email; you are not only possibly invading the privacy of others, without invitation, but you are also depriving the ng of information and participation in the discussion, which is against the purpose of the group. Also consider that something which you may believe to be trivial may be of value to others less knowledgeable (e.g. students, lay persons). If in doubt, ask if you may send email. Nor need you be afraid of giving a possibly incorrect answer in public (as I often do:-); most (serious) members of the ng will correct you. They won't pull you to pieces though, if they can see that you are making a genuine attempt, and not just being silly for some reason. Another "no" is swearing and cursing! We don't like it! Here is a summary of the most basic "rules":
- Never forget that there is a person at the other end.
- Read first, then think, then read again, then think again, then reply.
- Keep it factual and to the point.
- Do not swear or be otherwise abusive.
- Your articles are you!
- Take your time when writing.
- Watch the subject line.
- Be careful with humour and sarcasm.
- Do not use email unless specifically requested.
- If you do find an answer to your problem outside the group, let us know, we are interested.
- Keep the law in mind (this may vary from country to country, but may be international).
- Advertising is not usually objected to if it has a definite geological content, and does not offend any of the other points in the Charter.
- Do not post HTML to the ng. Use plain text only.
- Learn how to use filters; you'll probably need them!
- Learn how to use a search engine.
If you have a good ISP, you should be able to get further details of basic netiqutte from them. Do it! Now!
It is up to us to see that the n.g. remains at (regains) a high standard and does not revert to a bickering lounge every time something is disputed.

3. What questions/statements shouldn't be posted to s.g.g.?
If you are asking yourself whether or not a subject is appropriate for s.g.g then I suggest you read the charter (1.). Since the group is unmoderated, not a lot (legally) can be done if you choose to post a message outside the charter. Not-withstanding this, here is a list of subjects and suggested newsgroups that are more appropriate than s.g.g:
